If you’re reading this, you probably not excited to be here; the time has come for a new transmission. Fortunately, we at Harold's Used Auto Parts Inc are here to offer you solutions, and let you know that it’s not all bad. Replacing a tired and worn transmission will truly bring your car back to life, and you’ll probably be glad you did it.

Basically, if your transmission has finally bit the bullet, you have four options; new, used, rebuilt, or remanufactured. Here’s what you need to know about each.

New Transmissions

The pros to ordering a brand new transmission are as follows: It’s brand new, will offer no surprises, comes with a warranty, and will probably outlast your car, meaning you only have to do it once. You have peace of mind knowing it’s going to work, and going to work for a long time. The cons are that new transmissions tend to run on the expensive side...nothing from the dealer ever comes cheap. In many cases, a new transmission may cost close to or more than the value of your car, and therefore may not be a viable option.

Used Transmissions

Used transmissions are a popular choice for people on a tight budget. If you look around, you can often score a good deal online or at local scrap yards if you’re willing to pick it up yourself. However, buyer beware; typically a used transmission will already be out of the vehicle, so it’s impossible to test it to see what condition it’s in. Some yards will offer 30 day warranties, but since installing and removing transmissions is no short or simple affair, a transmission with a small guarantee can become a huge headache. Plus, once your 30 days is up, you’re on your own after that.

Rebuilt Transmissions

As in, have your transmission rebuilt. Prices vary depending on type, complexity, and the price of parts, but it’s often possible to rebuild a transmission and have it function as good as a new one. It really depends on what failed in the transmission in question, and what kind of car you have...in short, it’s a case by case basis. Come see us and we’ll give you our advice on your specific situation.

Remanufactured Transmissions

Remanufactured transmissions have been, and continue to be, a very popular choice. Remanufactured is different from rebuilt; a remanufactured transmission utilizes an old transmission case, thoroughly cleaned, with every part in it replaced or reworked so as to restore the transmission back to factory condition. A remanufactured transmission is, for all intents and purposes, a new transmission. Jasper, one of the largest remanufacturing companies, is well known for reliable remanufactured engines and transmissions, and offers 100,000 mile warranties on their transmissions. The only difference you’ll notice between a remanufactured transmission and a new one is the drastically lower price tag.  If you don’t want to gamble on a used transmission, don’t have time to have one rebuilt, and don’t want to shell out the money for a brand new transmission, a remanufactured transmission is the way to go.
