trailer of a tow truck

Is your truck used for towing? Whether you’re looking to upgrade your current setup or rig up something new, our technicians have you covered. Here’s some useful information on towing equipment, from Harold's Used Auto Parts Inc in Philadelphia, PA.

Trailer Hitch

It all starts with the right hitch. What kind of hitch you need depends on what you drive, and what you’re towing. Your truck probably has a bumper on it that can be used for towing, and maybe even a stock hitch; make sure either is rated for the weight and type of towing you plan to do.

There are universal and vehicle specific hitches of all different types on the market, most of which don’t require any modification to the vehicle. One of our technicians can recommend and install one based on your needs.

Ball/Ball Mount

The ball is bolted to the ball mount, and that assembly is held in the receiver (the hitch) with a pin and clip. These need to be rated for the proper weight as well. In addition, you want to make sure you have the right size ball for your trailer, as well as the right amount of drop on the ball mount. You want to keep the trailer level, not tilted too far backward or forward.

Use the right size pin as well - it’ll keep the trailer from jolting around, which is both annoying and potentially damaging to towing components, as well as dangerous. The right pin helps stabilize the trailer.

Brake Controller

A brake controller is only really necessary if you’re towing something outside the capacity of your braking system, but is nice to have no matter what. If your trailer is equipped with brakes, the controller assists in stopping the vehicle, so all the work doesn’t fall on your brakes. If you’re towing in hilly or mountainous areas, trailer brakes and a controller will make your ride a lot easier and safer, and your brakes won’t wear out so quickly.

Stabilizer Bars

Stabilizers also help out in heavy towing situations. These bars run from the hitch to the trailer, and dampen side to side movements of the trailer, for a smoother tow. If you have a lot of sway while towing a trailer, stabilizers would be a good addition to your setup.

Wiring

Wiring brings it all together. Get your wiring done professionally, and use correct, quality components - it’ll save you a lot of headache in the future, and look a lot better as well. Different wiring harnesses, adapters, shapes, and sizes exist for any make and model or application you can think of.

If you’re looking to get your truck tow-ready, our technicians can help. We’ll help you decide what’s best for what you need, and get it installed. For the best diesel truck service shop in Philadelphia, PA, call or stop by Harold's Used Auto Parts Inc today.
